A Tribute To Creed’s Inner Spirit
You can call it pre-wired or in the genes, but Creed Bratton has always exhibited an innate ability to jump into action when he sees others in need. At the Cow Palace Concert in the late 60’s, he quickly jumped into action when one of his band mates was in a critical situation during their warm up to play.
Rob Grill was testing the microphone with his bass in hand and all of a sudden it happened. Here are Creed’s own words about what occurred:
“Yes...it had been raining and the outdoor stage was still wet....Rob’s bass guitar was not grounded....during the start of the sound check, I look over and he’s got one hand on the mike stand and the other one on the bass....his hair is standing straight up....there’s an odd sizzle sound occurring.....I don’t remember thinking about it at all....but the stage crew and Ricky and Warren said I heaved my beloved Guild Blues Bird at our road manager and dove across the stage and hit him with a full body block...they said I was parallel to the floor connecting about chest level...I believe we lived through the ordeal???”
When speaking to Rick Coonce recently, he remembered the situation so well. He said “Yes, it all happened so quickly I didn’t even have time to think. Creed was already there taking care of it!”
